Here is a brief example:

This is a fun advertisement that plays on surrealistic art style by bringing an inanimate objects such as a sneaker to life. Massively outscale to the real-life object, the sneaker takes on gestural abilities, using a shoelace like an arm to reach out to a skate-boarder. I can’t decide if the skateboarder is taken aback by this interaction or is stunned by the gigantic shoe. Either way, it’s an interesting advertising ploy and the connection between product and potential client is identified.

Your goal is to locate a current example of a billboard, a photograph, or a poster that clearly conveys a social message. Review the concept of “social realism” as it is used in chapter 34 and be prepared to explain how your selected image connects social concerns with artistic presentation. Visit this website to learn more about social realism:

Here is an example:

I thought this poster made a strong connection between the use of an image that most viewers would recognize as being familiar but the context is enhanced by the written messages. The repetition of each sentence with the ending omitted becomes more powerful as you progress to the end until not only is a conclusion reached but a self-determination of change. This takes the viewer from being a passive participant to embracing the idea that every person makes a difference. You can too.

There’s a whole world of creativity out there to explore. Most of us probably think of paintings and sculpture when someone asks us, “What is art?” but the reality is that art encompasses so much more. There are many mediums to investigate, so many different techniques and methods of producing objects of beauty, and there are the art forms that encompass movement, sound, and performance. For this series of exercises students are encouraged to think outside the basics. There’s a lot of creativity to explore, here’s your opportunity to share the things that you find intriguing.

Expanding on the idea that art can be culturally determined and socially constructed through public forums, this week you’ll view a film in order to review the content to ascertain how art shapes and reflects culture.

❗ The Task:

  1. Select a film of your choosing and include the title of the film and the year of release at the beginning of your review – add a link for the IMDB page if there is one.
    For example: Pulp Fiction, 1994.
  2. Review the film by responding to the following prompts – try not to duplicate each other.
Describe how this film might shape public perception.
Identify the message or theme of this film.
Explain how American (or otherwise) culture influenced the production of this film.
  3. Your post should be a minimum of 250+ words.

#4: Art and Inequality

Content curation is the gathering, organizing and online presentation of content related to a particular theme or topic. In these exercises, the class will be curating a collection of related materials by selecting content to share. The collection will be built around ideas drawn from the curriculum.

Some observers have termed the 20th century the Race Era when it comes to evaluating artistic content. Numerous movements sought to explore and celebrate the arts of specific ethnic, political, and social groups. Your goal is to locate an example of a work that links art with inequality (ethnicity, feminism, colonialism, etc.). Look for examples that explore issues related to racism, gender, and/or social class.

Here is an example:

I selected this image because it struck a chord about a topic which I hear bandied among faculty on campus – criticisms which encompass collective accountability in regard to educational access and student entitlement. It makes me wonder what physical manifestations represent success to you (the student)? What is your measure for happiness? Do people without those ideas/objects lack success? This image addresses those ideas in a manner that makes me think about how we measure well-being both individually and collectively – which is also a part of why this class looks at cultural expectations through the lens of artistic expression.

❗ The Task:

  1. Identify an example of art that depicts inequality and explain the connection between the image and the social issue. Post the image AND the URL so others can view them – try not to duplicate each other.
  2. Your post should be a minimum of 250+ words.
  3. Cite resources used.

Content curation is the gathering, organizing and online presentation of content related to a particular theme or topic. In these exercises, the class will be curating a collection of related materials by selecting content to share. The collection will be built around ideas drawn from the curriculum.

When it comes to summarizing the art of the twentieth century – there’s a lot to consider. The term modern art has come to denote the innovating and even revolutionary developments in Western painting and the other visual arts since the second half of the 19th century. Embracing a wide variety of movements, styles, theories, and attitudes, the modernity of which resides in a common tendency to repudiate past conventions and precedents in subject matter, mode of depiction, and painting technique alike – applies with particular force to the painting of the last 150 years.

Back in the early 90s a graphic artist named Joan Gratz decided to create a short film called Mona Lisa Descending a Staircase in which she sought to compile and morph 100 of the most recognizable artworks of the 20th century. It was a great success, and at the time, demonstrated a groundbreaking graphic design technique. Watch the video by clicking the link below:

The video is named in part for one of the more controversial cubist compositions by Marcel Duchamp (Nude Descending a Staircase). No doubt you recognized many of the art pieces we’ve looked at during the quarter as the images on the video morphed from one to the next. Overall, this is an interesting way to visually summarize the class content.

❗ The Task:

  1. Share an example of an artwork from one of your favorite modern artists, including the artist’s name as well as the date of creation, and share why you selected this piece of work. Post the image AND the URL so others can view them – try not to duplicate each other.
