CARTER CASE ANALYSIS

PROFESSIONAL CONTEXT

Understanding racial and cultural identity development is important for effective counseling and advocacy. According to Sue and Sue (2016), models of racial and cultural identity development help counselors to assess for within-group differences, better understand client reactions to counseling and counselors of similar or different racial or cultural backgrounds, and bring visibility to sociopolitical influences on identity development. Yet, Sue and Sue (2016) also address some limitations of these stage-based models. While the models may be helpful in conceptualization racial or cultural identity development, their stage-based nature be a restricted representation of a more organic and complex process that is also impacted by other biopsychosocial characteristics such as gender, class, and sexual orientation.

Scenario

As you have been working through your counseling or therapy internship, you have had the opportunity to work with one or more members of the Carter family. Each member of the family has needs that are currently not being met but could be met or improved with the help of a counseling or therapy professional. You have been reviewing your case notes regarding your interactions with the relevant members of the Carter family and are composing a brief report of your most significant observations and recommendations for the Carter family to review with your assigned site supervisor.

    CARTER CASE STUDY

The Carters are a middle class family who live in a predominantly white area. Mrs. Carter is African American, and Mr. Carter is European American. They are concerned as their son James, a junior in high school and honors student, is adopting music, clothing, and behaviors associated with low-SES African-Americans when they have tried to raise him not to identify with those parts of Black culture. In the past month they have experienced conflict with James who has challenged their expectations. They have also noticed that he has smelled of alcohol when returning home from spending the evening at friend’s house, and just this week they received a call from one of James’ teachers reporting he may fail a class.
