Chinese Exclusion
Why did the United States exclude Chinese immigrants in 1882?
Like other peoples all over the world, many Chinese viewed the United States as a land of economic opportunity. An 1868 treaty allowed the Chinese to immigrate to the United States, and some 160,000 did so. The increasing numbers of Chinese along the West Coasts prompted a nativist backlash. Opponents offered many arguments in favor of a ban on future immigration from China. Congress responded with the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which was renewed in 1892 and again in 1902.
