1.Modern technology has revolutionized the health care industry. With processes such as record keeping, appointment setting and even diagnoses, have changed and improved the quality of healthcare. One benefit of utilizing modern technology in the delivery of care is communication. Patients are allowed to access information or visit with physicians via webcam from the comfort of their own home. They can access their portals or share data with guardians as well. Another benefit is the fact that some patients can monitor and track their conditions through the smartphone and share information electronically with their physicians. These mobile apps can help with monitoring sleep, blood pressure and even insulin! All are improvement to health care delivery but when there are benefits, there are usually some risks involved as well. We all know that with everything that is being used through technology runs the risk of data breach and privacy issues. Information that is used may not be collected or used properly and may even be disclosed to third parties without the knowledge of the patient. Cyber criminals can have access or steal personal data causing a loss of privacy. Facilities are then put in a position of whether they are liable or not. So even though modern technology has made tremendous advancement in the medical industry, they are challenged with implemented procedures and policies that will ensure protection for patients.
2.It would be hard to deny the benefits and progress we have seen in the health care industry because of technology. For example, the development of medical devices and equipment has enabled health care practitioners to provide better patient care, give better diagnosis, and improve surgical procedures. Information technology has allowed patients and physicians to stay connected even if they are thousands of miles away. It also allows physicians to access their patient’s health information within seconds. Technology also allows huge advancements in medical research. It allows researchers to examine diseases on a much deeper level and create vaccines that can save thousands of lives.
Although there are many benefits to technology in health care, there are also so risks that come along with it. Even though there are privacy laws put into place, there are still data breeches that happen and that puts everyone’s personal information at risk. Patients information can be used, collected, or shared without their knowledge.
I personally haven’t had experience using technology with my own health care, but I have used it plenty of times for my daughter. I love being able to send a message to her doctor in the middle of the night and wake up to a response in the morning. I did this recently and my daughter’s doctor was on a cruise off the coast of Norway and he was still able to send in a prescription that was ready that morning. I think the technology we have available to us is amazing.
