discussion question 1387

NO PLAGIARISM

PLEASE ANSWER ONE OF THE OPTIONS

For the Week 6 Discussion Assignment (D5), write two to three well-developed paragraphs responding to one of the options listed below:

  1. What does Zora Neale Hurston’s essay “How It Feels to Be Colored Me” say about the white supremacy that was at the heart of the Jim Crow South? How does her vision of black-white relations compare to Harriet Jacobs’s over fifty years earlier?
  2. Carlos Bulosan’s writing depicts the economic and racial prejudice he encountered and observed in the United States. However, critics feel he still fills his work with the hope of equality for all people. Choose one of the assigned poems by Bulosan and discuss whether you agree or disagree with the critics.
  3. In his essay “Freedom from Want,” Carlos Bulosan writes, “We are not really free unless we use what we produce. So long as the fruit of our labor is denied us, so long will want manifest itself in a world of slaves.” Review the literary elements of slave narratives (focus on food and water, fear for the family, variations of hope and hopelessness, dehumanization, power and powerlessness, and the desire for education). Think about the ways that Steinbeck’s novel about migrants compares and contrasts with the slave narratives of the nineteenth century. What qualities do they share? What are some differences?
  4. How does the myth of the “Old South” appear to the writers of the Southern Renaissance? How do Faulkner and Hurston portray the “New South”?
  5. In Faulkner’s short story “The Tall Men,” the “investigator” frequently refers to the McCallum men and the deputy marshall as “these people.” How does he see “these people”? What assumptions does he make? How do you see “these people” as portrayed in the story?

Please post your response to one of the prompts by 10:30 pm Thursday, July 18th, and comment on two of the class posts by 10:30 pm Saturday, July 20th.
