Insurance companies have become the powerhouse of the medical field and in most cases, determine if and what quality of health services you will receive. Having no medical coverage immediately places your health concerns inferior to those who have it. Healthcare is not deemed as a right that is afforded to everyone but instead is portrayed as a privilege. The need for care generally supersedes patients covered by insurance, and no one wants to do work for free. It shows that not all medical providers went into this field to make a difference in people’s lives or to heal the sick, but strictly for the money. There are instances where people must be seen regardless of if they have coverage or not. “In emergencies, individuals who come or are brought to a hospital have a statutory right to be seen and have their conditions stabilized” (Showalter, 2012, pp. 58). When insurance coverage is low, it impacts the hospital’s economic, ethical, and legal responsibilities.

Economically, the hospital will be affected by not being paid for services that are provided, which could result in a lack of finances to provide necessities for the organization to stay afloat. If too many uninsured patients are being seen, the hospital’s profit will decrease, and more money will be going out than coming in, and that is not beneficial for any progressing business. Ethically, you never want to turn down a person in need. It is inhumane to turn someone away from medical care because they cannot afford it. Healthcare is not the cheapest necessity to have, and not everyone was dealt the same hand to deny a person help of that magnitude. Legally, the hospital has rules and regulations on how to handle these instances and must abide by them regardless of who it is walking through the door. There are also federal and state laws that must be upheld irrespective of the hospital’s rules. They also have legal bindings with these insurance companies and failure to pay or taking too long to pay probes a problem. All these aspects are impacted due to tensions between insurance coverage and the need for care.
