   1. Where you fit into a specific system of power and oppression (race, ability, sexuality, gender, socioeconomic class, etc.). Some possible starting places could be: How does a particular system impact me? How do I impact or perpetuate or maintain specific systems? How do different systems I’m part of intersect? It could also be helpful to contrast your experience with that of another person of different identities in similar systems.

Purpose:

Reading Reviews are short and concise writing assignments intended to help the students of this course process the main ideas of the weekly course materials through Application (how can you use it?), Analysis (how does it connect to other things you know or think?), and Evaluation (are the ideas of the course material relevant or accurate? Can you support your judgement with evidence or reasoning?). Leaders possess the skills to evaluate information from their own perspective, connect seemingly disparate ideas, and to make those ideas relevant through realistic application for their followers.

This assignment is intended to be a concise analysis. Please contact the Writing Center or the instructional team if you need more support with concise writing. This guide from the Purdue OWL may also be helpful. Also, we will use the APA citation style for all writing in this course.

Excellent Response – 20 points

• Review showcases comprehensive application, analysis, and evaluation.
• Response is 200-300 words in length (total, not per question). If student response is over 300 words, it is not qualified as an “Excellent” response. There are 0-3 spelling or grammatical errors.
• All prompts have been addressed.
• Review focuses on the main ideas from the course material(s).
• Application – main ideas from the course materials are identified in students’ submission, and those ideas have been connected to specific and real or realistic environments, activities, and/or scenarios. Student’s application is specific to a time and setting.
• Analysis – main ideas from the course material(s) are identified in student’s submission. Student has connected those main ideas to their ideas and experiences. Student supports their ideas on the reading with evidence/details from the course materials.
• Evaluation – writing demonstrates judgments based on the main ideas from the course materials. Judgements are based on the main ideas of the course material(s) and supported by evidence or reasoning.

Meets Expectations / Minor Improvements Needed – 15 – 19 points

• All prompts have been addressed.
• Review mostly showcases application, analysis, and evaluation.
• Response is 200-350 words in length. If student response is over 350 words, it is not qualified as “Meets Expectations”. There are 3- 6 spelling or grammatical errors.
• Student primarily focuses on main ideas of the course material(s).
• Application – main ideas from the course materials are identified in students’ submission, and those ideas have been connected to real or realistic environments, activities, and/or scenarios. Minor improvement – student’s response should be more specific to a time or setting.
• Analysis – main ideas from the course material(s) are identified in student’s submission. Student has connected those main ideas to their ideas and experiences. Student supports their ideas on the reading with evidence/details from the course materials. Minor Improvement – student may have misinterpreted information or focused a part of the response on a detail rather than a main idea.
• Evaluation – writing demonstrates judgments based on the course materials’ main ideas. Judgements are based on the main ideas of the course material(s) and supported by evidence or reasoning. Minor Improvement – more reasoning or evidence is needed to support the student’s evaluation of the material or student has misinterpreted an idea from the reading leading to irrelevant evaluation.

Below Expectations / Needs Significant Improvement- 7 – 14 points

• Some prompts are completely unaddressed.
• Review showcases limited application, analysis, or evaluation.
• Response is 200-429 words in length. If student response is over 429 words, it is not qualified as an “Below Expectations” response. There are 7+ spelling or grammar errors.
• Student writing demonstrates a limited understanding of course materials by focusing on details of the materials and/or making significant misinterpretations.
• Course materials are applied, analyzed or evaluated out of the larger context of the reading.
• Application – Writing includes a generalization of an experience, not specific to a time or setting.
• Analysis – Writing focuses on summary rather than analysis. Or analysis is unsupported with details. Or analysis is not focused on main ideas of the course materials.
• Evaluation – Judgement is not supported with evidence or reasoning. Or judgement focuses on detail of course materials or is out of context of the materials main or minor ideas.

No Grade 0

• No submission.

OR

• Submission is illegible due to significant spelling or grammatical errors. Instructors cannot understand intended meaning of ideas throughout submission.
