Persuasive Essay Topic Proposal

In the coming weeks, you will research and write a persuasive essay on a topic that has importance to a specific place and issue, and you will take a position on this issue with the purpose of persuading your audience. For this discussion assignment, you will choose your persuasive essay topic. You may choose to continue writing about the work place you identified in Week 1, but you will need to narrow the general topic to include a problem that needs to be addressed, OR you may choose to write about a different place.

By the due date assigned, post your topic to the Discussion Area. Then, by the end of the week, offer feedback to at least two classmates on their posts.

Choose one of the following approaches:

  1. Your topic could build from the place or community you wrote about in your narrative essay. You will want to find a problem to address associated with that place and explore either the problems, causes, or solutions.
  2. You may select an issue that is important to your community, city, or state. The issue you select should be important to the place and people. For example, you may want to address the causes of a specific type of problem that affects an area or a group of people where you live, or you may want to offer a solution to the problem.

Example topics:

  • beach erosion in a specific town
  • littering or pollution at a specific location
  • urban gardening in a specific city
  • walk ways or bike ways in a specific town
  • health care inequities in a specific state
  • organic or farm-fresh produce availability in a specific community

Essay Instructions:

Select ONE of the primary source readings from those included below and write an essay on the selection. In writing this essay, integrate information from the textbook with the primary source reading. Write an introduction paragraph and present a thesis to the reader. Choose relevant and specific examples to support your arguments in an appropriate number of body paragraphs. Write a unified essay while answering each of the bulleted questions and organize the information by placing it in logical sequence. Come to a conclusion in a separate paragraph.

The use of any other sources beyond the one(s) assigned as well as the textbook in writing the essay is not expected. If other sources are used to gather information they must be documented and “historical” or written by a professional historian. If information (not just quotations) is used from a source and not documented, that is plagiarism, a form of cheating. See the section on documentation and Academic Honesty in the Syllabus. Also, if direct quotations are used from the sources assigned, textbook, or any other material they must be properly documented and a works cited page included.

Essays should be 700 to 900 words long, double-spaced with normal margins, in a 12 font, and your name and a title at the top. Indicate paragraph separation by indenting the first line rather than adding additional space. The essay should be in formal English, using proper spelling, grammar and punctuation. Late papers may be downgraded 10% for every day late. Again, 700 words is the minimum requirement. Failure to follow through on these guidelines will result in a less than desirable grade. Save the essay with your last name and Primary Source Essay 1 as the title.

WEB SOIL SURVEY (WSS) will be used to obtain a soil map of the site you are interested in. The pdf soil survey used to have map sheets linked at the end but the USDA has slowly been removing them from the pdf soil surveys and having people use WSS instead as it can be updated more easily. You should still use the county soil survey pdf to do this assignment. Later in the semester we will use Web Soil Survey data. Don’t use the data from WSS for this assignment. Obtaining a map is ok though. You will be selecting a transect from some location you are interested in (PART 1) and writing up a description of the site along with drawing some cross-sections, data tables, and describing the site and land use issues related to the soils present (PART 2). Please view the sample Soil Survey Report linked on Blackboard. This is what an A grade would look like. We will be doing another similar project in a few weeks for a location you select that is not in Illinois. 2 PART 1 (10 pts) due Sunday, 7-21-19 at 11:55 PM – Submit on Blackboard Using the soil survey you obtained, select an area of land that contains at minimum 4 different soil series (not 4 map units). For example, map units 76C and 76D would count as 1 soil series even they are different map units (have different slope but are the same soil).
