Your third longer-term assignment in this course is a presentation or short paper in which you will share your question derived at the end of your observation journal in learning block 4-3 and discuss why it is important and how developments in the social sciences contribute to our understanding of ourselves, each other, and the world around us.

This final reflection will assess the following course outcomes, which you focused on throughout Theme 4:

● Investigate major developments in the progression of social scientific thought for informing critical questions that drive social scientific inquiry

● Articulate the value of the social sciences for their impact on contemporary issues

Your third project is a presentation or short paper (you are free to choose) that explores the question you posed at the end of your observation journal. With that question as your topic, you will explain why the answer to it is important to understanding yourself, other people, and the world around you and how the social sciences have developed to help us answer these important questions. The critical elements of this assessment will be evaluated by the information in your presentation or paper. Be sure your actual question is apparent on the presentation or paper.


Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed in your submission:

I. Explain why your question is important to you as a member of society.

II. Detail the major developments in social science thinking that drive questions regarding studying the individual. Use course resources to back up your discussion.

III. Explain how finding the answer to your question might impact others around you. For instance, who might be most invested in the answer?

IV. Detail the major developments in social science thinking that drive questions regarding studying others. Use course resources to back up your discussion.

V. Explain why studying human behavior and identity is a valuable human endeavor.

VI. Detail the major developments in social science thinking that support the study and advancement of the social sciences as necessary and valuable. Use course resources to back up your discussion.

To help you explore functions, issues, objectives in corrections through the six assignment prompts for your Final Paper you may consider optional sources referenced in the following Final Project Scenario and References interactive resource (Links to an external site.) in addition to other scholarly or credible sources.

As noted below your paper must use at least five sources in addition to the course text. Also, at least three of the five must be scholarly and two may be credible resources. Note that of the three scholarly sources, at least two must be obtained from the Ashford University Library.

Assignment Prompts

The purpose of the Final Paper is to consider functions, issues, and objectives in corrections. Your paper needs to address each of the following six elements:

  • Explain functions (in terms of goals and activities) of a historical state correctional system and functions of a contemporary state correctional system.
    • To assist you with this part, you could consider your textbook’s discussion of historical correctional systems. You may also consider state department of corrections websites and/or other relevant scholarly or credible resources.
  • Analyze criminal justice issues for corrections personnel and the constitutional rights of offenders relevant to punishment, rehabilitation, treatment, and supervision.
    • To assist you with this part, you could consider issues relating to administrative objectives and duties for corrections personnel and issues relating to constitutional rights of incarcerated persons.
  • Examine impacts of incarceration and social justice issues for at least one correctional institution in the case file and at least one private correctional institution.
    • For private institutions, you could draw on your textbook and/or other scholarly or credible sources that address privatization of corrections.
  • Examine cultural sensitivity and diversity awareness issues relevant to one or more of the following settings: jails, prisons, or community corrections.
    • You may wish to consider scholarly or credible sources that you used to address any cultural sensitivity issues and diversity issues from your Week 1 Issues and Constitutional Rights assignment.
  • Analyze at least two methods of alternative sentencing utilized by one or more of the correctional systems in the case file.
    • You could also consider alternative sanctions such as electronic monitoring, halfway houses, and/or other types of community corrections mentioned in your textbook.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of at least one correctional institution in the case file and of at least one private institution.
    • To help you with this part, you may wish to consider effectiveness regarding one or more of the following: security, costs, recidivism, social justice interests, and/or other measures relevant to correctional goals.

When consulting resources, examine statistical data and analyses to inform your positions and any other scholarly or practical references that lend credibility to the project and the findings presented.

  3. Fire Station Number 2 is partially collapsed; Engine truck 3 is under the rubble, the other firetruck is usable and there have been no injuries or loss of life at the firehouse.

Lean Management Practices would benefit my organization in fixing the issue of duplication of services that do not serve our students and potential students efficiently and effectively. Currently, the college is separated into two divisions (Curriculum and Continuing Education). In each division there are separate staff members available to take calls to answer questions about available classes and to register students for these classes, but these staff members often are not aware of what the other division is offering, when it is being offered, and where the classes are being held. This leads to frustrated students and potential students that contact the college for assistance in finding what they need and sometimes ending in a situation where the potential student just gives up. Lean Management Practices would help management look at the current situation and evaluate how they could combine these services, cutting unnecessary personnel and reorganizing responsibilities for employees so that the workload is more evenly distributed and therefore more efficient to the people we serve. As noted in Chapter 25, “A lean organization understands customer value and focuses its key processes to continuously increase it” (Kiran, 2017, p. 364).
The process-oriented practices, such as 1)Assure seamless information flow, 2)Maintain challenges to existing processes, 3)Identify and optimize enterprise flow, and 4)Maintain stability in changing the environment, and Human-oriented practices such as 1)Promote lean leadership at all levels, 2)Make decisions at lowest appropriate level, 3)Optimize capability and utilization of people, 4)Continuous focus on the customer, and 5)Nurture a learning environment, could benefit our organization in fixing these issues (Kiran, 2017, p. 370). Reorganizing the staff involved in registering students into one central location would help improve the communication issues because they would no longer be physically separated in different locations with a sense of being their own entity. In centrally locating the employees, responsibilities and workload could more evenly be distributed and maintain a sense of stability because the department would then be more efficiently organized. By nurturing a learning environment, cross-training employees to answer questions on all available programs and responsibilities associated with the registration process will lead back to building an environment where employees feel valued and trusted as well as focused on providing the best customer service in the most efficient manner.

Part 3:

Conduct research and find an organization that is experiencing troubled times because of some poor or inadequate processes/procedures. Of course you won’t know all the specifics but your professional experience and research will help you fill the role of a consultant who has been asked to help the organization determine what the best way forward is in terms of effective TQM practices. The first thing the organization would like you to do is conduct a 5S Lean Audit (Use the attached spreadsheet.). Feel free to adapt the checklist for a product, service, process or any other problem point to help your analysis. The template has sample information to help your efforts. Next, once you have completed the 5S Audit the organization has asked you to complete a DMAIC Planning Worksheet so that they can begin to think about the actions to fix the problem(s). You have some flexibility with the dates but just make sure you explain what actions to would take for each part of the DMAIC to help the organization. Make sure you include a brief write up explaining your practices. Your write up should be in APA format, 2-3 pages long (double spaced) and express your points clearly. Also, make sure you include the source of your reference.
